Once upon a time in Ex-Ex-Ex-Soviet-Union I went to school. The school was a place where teachers were trying to upload couple of nice, but mostly useless utilities into our fairly blank brains with plenty of empty space. However, common ongoing fights, either for girls, or for whose group is better or for which rock band rocks more, were twisting the code of these utils into unmanageable state. Of course, around grade 8 lucky ones had some kind of more or less stable operating system, others1 went to learn practical things where brain should not be used a lot and straight assembler language guaranteed survival on assembly lines (there were just couple of commands with secret meanings). But during lower grades it was quite difficult. The first and most problematic utility was 'cat'2. The idea was to read couple of small files, concatenate it in the head, and produce intelligible output in form of meaningful sentences about what one just read. I remember brutal testing utility in form of my history teacher that was working like this:
- Tell me about what you have read?
- Ahm... Mmm... peasants... where kolkhozniks in medieval times(?) and... mmm...
- Sit down, the version is unstable. Give me your achievements journal for your parents to see.
Parents where trying rigorously to fix the tool, sometimes making it to work just in this one particular case, creating a huge "if" in main() function and hard coding output to be fail proof. Some unit testing apps were approving the tests, while, like in my case, some were trying to vary the parameters.
- Why so many masterpieces were created during renaissance?
- Because working class was eager to show the capitalists that they can do more than shoes, for example draw helicopters, like Da Vinci.
- Ahm... Mmm... Ok. Hmm. Well. Akhm. Yeah... "B".
...
Well, I would not state that my operating system is very stable now, but I learned to work around most of the issues over the time. At least on basic compatibilty level. Didn't we all?

1 In fact, some of them turned out to be more efficient then former ones in many categories, so that at the end no two installations were comparable at all.
2 It has nothing in common with purry fluffy species, which were hunting mice in attics and backyards.
