видимо, имелась в виду доMPSная эра, когда лексика и синтаксис языка описывались с помощью bnf. lex/bison (flex/yacc - реинкарнация) всего лишь тулзы для генерации парсера по этим описаниям.

Для явы - antlr, javacc, sablecc, например.
